People flocked to Central Park on Thursday (January 4) afternoon, after 7.8 inches (19.8 centimeters) of snow coated the park, according to the National Weather Service.

Children, adults and pets all enjoyed an afternoon frolicking in the snow. Some sledded down a hill, while others built snowmen.

“Instead of staying inside, gotta go outside and enjoy the weather,” said Rene Puerta, whose flight back home to Miami was delayed.

Due to the snowstorm, nearly 5,000 U.S. airline flights were canceled. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport temporarily halted all flights due to whiteout conditions, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
