Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending today?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp and SafeGraph, a dataset of commercial points of interest and their visitor patterns, to analyze which local businesses have been getting a noteworthy increase in attention this month.

To find out who made the list, we first looked at New York City businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance. Then we analyzed foot traffic data from SafeGraph to validate the trends.

Open since 2006, this popular cocktail bar and traditional American spot has been getting a lot more foot traffic lately.

While P.J. Clarke’s stayed on par with the median 1.3% increase in new reviews for traditional American spots on Yelp over the past month, maintaining a mixed three-star rating, the number of visitors to P.J. Clarke’s more than tripled over the same time frame, according to SafeGraph’s foot traffic data.

This location of P.J. Clarke’s is located near the river at 250 Vesey St. in Battery Park City, while the original can be found on Third Avenue. The spot serves lunch and dinner daily. Stop in for burgers, steaks, seafood, offerings from the raw bar — and, of course, views of the Hudson River.
