The Explorers Club Film Committee invites you to a special Presidential Dinner and screening of the feature documentary Voice of America: Lowell Thomas and the Rise of Broadcast News. Join us for a rich evening devoted to this globetrotting writer, broadcaster, and distinguished member of The Explorers Club.

If you watch a news video today, listen to a newscast or download a podcast, then you are benefiting from the work of Lowell Thomas. As Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Dalai Lama and many others explain in this lively film about a dynamo of a man, Lowell Thomas invented what is now often celebrated or disparaged as “traditional journalism.”

And he was a great adventurer. In a primetime special after his death, Walter Cronkite concluded that Thomas had “crammed a couple of centuries worth of living into” his 89 years. He returned from Arabia in 1919 with film of “Lawrence of Arabia,” a legend he also more or less invented through a multi-media show. After riding a mule caravan up into forbidden Tibet in 1949, just before the Chinese invaded, Thomas returned with his leg broken in eight places but also with precious film of the young Dalai Lama.

Today, as truthful journalists are accused of fake news, the life of Lowell Thomas reminds us why a “free press” is important to democracy and shared faith in factual reporting is a cornerstone of a civil society.

A film by Rick Moulton. Narrated by Robert Siegel.

The screening will be presented by Richard Wiese, President of the Explorers Club, and followed by a panel discussion featuring Filmmaker Rick Moulton, NYU Journalism Professor Mitchell Stephens, and Anne Thomas Donaghy, the granddaughter of Lowell Thomas.

5/18/2018  – Monte Booker Live (Soulection)

Blending hip-hop, R&B, soul and melodic electronic sounds, Monte Booker highlights a percussion-heavy, sample-free sound that is unable to be imitated.

Chicago producer Monte Booker is 22. He recently referred to some of his formative influences, like the Neptunes and Kanye West, as “the old hip-hop scene.” He considers Flying Lotus a genre unto himself. Booker is a late millennial making music for a new millennium. His sounds are bespoke, and his beats don’t smack as much as they pleasingly tumble forth, like tennis balls in a dryer. He puts his generation’s restless energy to work by zapping small clicks and shots of static in and out of his productions. He makes hip-hop and R&B that pings between FlyLo’s bulging maximalism and the charming exactitude of found-sound eccentrics Matmos. Along with his like-minded Zero Fatigue crew—including rapper Smino, Jay2, Bari, and singer Ravyn Lenae—Booker is creating music with a sense of history that could only exist right now.

The Mama Foundation for the Arts proudly announces the brand new production of their acclaimed musical, Let the Music Play… Gospel! From the creators of Mama, I Want To Sing! – the worldwide musical sensation – Let the Music Play… Gospel! is a musical celebration of a generation, featuring an intergenerational company of performers comprised of both younger and older adults; at The Dempsey Theater in Harlem (127 West 127th Street, between Lenox and Seventh Avenues). After a long running hit engagement in 1988, the joyous concert musical returns 30 years later, for an energized remounting; performances begin on April 7, 2018.

The show features a new and fresh showcasing of a classic musical genre. Ms. Higginsen invites you to experience the floor-stomping and roof-shaking power of her legendary musical: “This show is guaranteed to warm your soul and lift your spirits.
