New York’s strongest run was an unbroken string of placements from 1957 to 1966. New York also had a streak of 3 consecutive 1st runner-up placements from 1972 to 1974. Here are the beauties from New York City that marked the first years of the Miss USA pageant.

1952 – Jacqueline “Jackie” Loughery

Jackie Loughery was born on April 18, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, USA as Jacqueline V. Loughery.

Loughery won the Miss USA title after a second ballot broke a first-place tie. Loughery, a redhead, went on to represent the USA at the first Miss Universe pageant, where she placed ninth.

Part of her prize package as Miss USA included a contract with Universal Pictures, which led to a career in movies and television. She adopted the stage name Evelyn Avery, but is more often credited with her own name (the name she used when she won the Miss USA title).
