If you’ve ever dreamed of staying at an urban NYC retreat where you can spend the night outdoors, there is the perfect place for you. The Collective Governors Island site is New York City like you have never experienced before. A quick ferry ride from downtown Manhattan, the peaceful oasis is nestled near the hills of historic Governors Island. You’ll be surrounded by sprawling green space with unparalleled views of the Statue of Liberty across the New York Harbor.

Governors Island feels like a world away, offering a wide array of history, recreation and acres of expansive park space to wander with some of New York City’s best views. A hub for art and culture, the island hosts a rich calendar of visual art, performances and educational exhibits, plus tours of the island’s historic National Monuments, giving visitors a glimpse into its important place in United States history. A car-free environment, the island is best explored by foot or on a bicycle.
Tents sleeping up to two adults and one child are available or you can reserve one of the brand-new Outlook Shelters, a full-service suite that’s partly made from repurposed shipping containers. This getaway includes running water, 1,500-plus thread-count sheets and electricity. Plus, the on-site restaurant Three Peaks Lodge serves drinks and food throughout the day, with glittering views of downtown Manhattan just across the harbor.

The property’s restaurant and bar, Three Peaks Lodge, is located in the main gathering tent. The restaurant serves daily continental breakfast, light bites for lunch and a $150 tasting menu for dinner. If you’d prefer a lighter dinner, the restaurant serves a la carte shareables like asparagus and bean dip, carrot and avocado tartare and a burrata plate.
To satisfy your sweet tooth, the bar sells DIY s’mores packages, which can be prepared next to one of the two fire pits.
There isn’t too much to “do” on the island, but that’s the point. You can enjoy your summer read with a glass of rosé in a comfortable lounge chair on the property’s expansive lawn area. The property doesn’t have a gym, but you can rent bicycles or walk/run around the island. Collective Governors Island site closes to the public on weeknights and the last ferry leaves at 7pm.
