STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Tired of circling the block looking for a parking spot? You’re not alone.

A new survey by Zipcar found that 92% of New York City drivers said that finding a public parking spot is at least “slightly stressful,” with 62% describing the endeavor as “very stressful” or “extremely stressful.”

Among the stresses of New York City parking were:

  • The ability to fit into a spot, 86% of drivers found stressful
  • Holding up traffic while trying to park, 83% of people found stressful
  • Avoiding parking tickets, 82% of people found stressful

In fact, respondents were less stressed out by sitting next to crying babies on a plane, which 87% found stressful. In addition, 76% found going to the dentist stressful, and 74% said oversleeping their alarm caused stress.

Drivers said it could take them up to two hours to find a public parking spot, with the average time being 19 minutes.

The process can be so tedious and frustrating that nearly 29% of respondents said they used profanity while looking for a spot. Manhattan drivers are perhaps the most frustrated, with 37% reporting the use of profanity while looking for spot. Staten Islanders, however, were at the bottom of the list, with just 22% reporting cursing the parking process. […]
